Granite
Granite is an igneous rock, formed from the slow cooling of magma deep within the
earth. The major components of granite are quartz, feldspar, mica and many other
minerals. The sequence of events which bring natural stone from the quarry to your
home has not changed much since the ancient Greeks. Large blocks of granite or marble
are cut from the quarries. Then the blocks are cut into slabs that are polished
on one side and available for viewing at our facility.
Our inventory of slabs is brought to you from quarries all around the world. From
exotic to subdued, stone countertops enhance the beauty of your home in rich tones
and patterns that are unique and one-of-a-kind. Marble and Granite Works exclusively
offers “Maintenance Free Granite” , at no additional cost to you!
Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock found in mountainous regions of most countries around
the world. It is composed of re-crystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite
or dolomite. Marble is a softer more porous stone. Marble is recommended for bathrooms,
vanities, fire place surrounds and hearths. The beauty of marble is timeless and
elegant. Marble will be sealed at installation and a sealer should be applied annually.
Limestone
Like most other sedimentary rocks, Limestone’s are composed of grains; however,
most grains in Limestone are skeletal fragments of marine organisms. Limestone is
a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and/or aragonite. With
a more rustic look, Limestone is extremely popular in European homes. Limestone will
have a matte finish (not polished). Your countertops will be sealed at installation
and a sealer should be applied annually.
Travertine
Travertine is a sedimentary limestone formed by chemical precipitation of calcium
salts in watersheds. It contains actual cavities throughout its composition that
are typically filled for a smoother appearance. Travertine is considered to have
an “Old World” look. It can be polished or honed and will require annual sealing.
Soapstone
Soapstone is quarried like any of the natural stones. It is a steatite stone and
its primary components are magnesite, dolomite, chlorite, and talc. Because it is
composed largely of talc, the surface will have a softer, somewhat “soapy” feel.
While heat resistant and nonporous, Soapstone will scratch easily and requires regular
maintenance. Upon installation of soapstone countertops, we recommend that the stone
is sealed with mineral oil or stone sealer. Some people opt never to apply anything
to the stone, as it will soon begin to take on its own natural patina with regular
use.
